Research theme: nursing interventions and clinical results

GRIISIQ supports and facilitates research into nursing interventions insofar as they lead to clinical outcomes.

For GRIISIQ, "nursing intervention" refers to a planned action implemented by a nurse or researcher in the course of a study involving patients in order to determine whether such an action produces the expected clinical outcome(s).

The intervention can be, for example:

  • A type of therapy;
  • An educational strategy;
  • A support program or method of nursing care (e.g.: planning for discharge).

The concept of "clinical outcomes" refers to the evaluation of such interventions on patient populations, not on nurses, students, services or organizations. Such outcomes can encompass one or more of the following patient domains [1]:

  • Behavioural: change in the manner in which a person conducts herself;
  • Knowledge: change in a person's understanding of her condition and its management;
  • Physiological: measured change in a person's body's functioning (e.g., heart or respiratory rate);
  • Psychological/relational: change in the person's manner of relating intrapersonally or interpersonally.
